Sensory Systems

This section is designed to help you better understand how our sensory system can affect a person’s performance on the beach and in the water.

Some disabilities may not show themselves physically, but may still hinder a person’s ability to participate in everyday activities. A disruption to one of our sensory systems (sight, smell, sound, taste, touch, proprioception, vestibular) might make it difficult to participate in an AccesSurf event.

What do they do?

Our senses send messages to our brain to make us aware of what is happening and how to best respond.

What are our senses?

1. Sight

2. Smell

3. Touch

4. Taste

5. Sound
